[dropcap]T[/dropcap]hanks to the ruling of a federal judge yesterday, same-day voter registration at individual polling places on Election Day has been struck down. The law allowing such registration had distinguished between more populous counties — where same-day registration at polling places was required — and less populous counties, where it was not. In those less populous counties, voters wishing to register to vote on Election Day would have been required to register at one central location, not at their respective polling place.
The judge’s ruling on this case determined that this two-tier distinction was unfair to voters in less populous counties, who wouldn’t have the same ability to register as those in larger counties. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has said that the state will appeal this ruling.
If the Democrats — or anyone else — wants there to be registration at every polling place across the state, then they should pass a law that says that, and every voter should be treated equally in all 102 counties, not just in the cherry-picked counties that they think benefit them.
