Chicago Public Media, the non-profit parent company of both the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ radio, announced today the termination of 14 employees, which represents about 15% of the organization’s workforce.
The downsizing comes two years after the merger of WBEZ radio with the Sun-Times newspaper.
SAG-AFTRA, which represents the station’s unionized, content-producing workforce, said in a statement: “This involuntary layoff — coupled with positions that have not been filled in the last year — represents a significant reduction in WBEZ’s content unit.”
“These losses are devastating to our listeners and members,” the union continued. “The decision also contradicts [Chicago Public Media’s] stated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion — both at WBEZ and to communities of color that we serve.”
Listeners have begun to react to the news:
You became the Fox News of the Left. You alienated liberal Democrats like me. You forgot what unbiased Journalism means and lost devoted listeners and funders. Every time I tune in now, I cringe. Time to recenter your journalistic principles away from activism and ideologies.

So on the mark.

My car radio might as well have only had one channel (WBEZ) from the time I learned to drive way back in the 90s until about 2022. It is nothing like what it used to be. I miss the old WBEZ.
Yup. I was a monthly member starting in '05, but discontinued around '22. It was too much. See every issue through a progressive/racial/sexual ID lens just became exhausting.

If you play a drinking game with NPR every time a package hits its race/gender talking point you'll be blasted before the hour is done.

Perfectly said. I'm a lifelong Dem who will be enthusiastically voting for Biden in November (unlike many activists on the left), and I find WBEZ totally ridiculous now. Nonstop cringe

Nearly every local piece had a "woke" agenda or completely misunderstood @WBEZ's core audience, many who listened for DECADES.
A 6-hr long podcast on Kanye? Really? Another hit piece by @natalieymoore? Zero coverage of the poor quality product of @CTULocal1? C'mon!
I went from listening every day to actively avoiding @WBEZ because of the hard left identity politics. Go woke go broke

Start reporting the news with no bias or political angle and your audience may increase. Keep pushing a political agenda and you will see more layoffs
