President Trump took to Twitter early this morning to level an allegation against his predecessor which, if it turns out to be true, would have enormous consequences for the nation.
Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!

Is it legal for a sitting President to be "wire tapping" a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!

I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election!

How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

These claims come after several weeks of clean-up efforts by the Trump administration after Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn stepped down from his post as National Security Advisor, under mounting pressure after his communication with Russian diplomats was revealed. Also, just this past week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions came under attack from Democrats after testimony during his Senate confirmation hearing seemed to indicate he failed to disclose meeting with a Russian ambassador during the campaign.
As the leaks surrounding Trump officials continue, their origin has become a topic of conversation among politicians and the media alike.
A number of commentators have pointed to the so-called “deep state” — the bureaucratic establishment embedded within the government that controls a large amount of behind-the-scenes power.
Just last month, Rush Limbaugh speculated that deep state officials with ties to Obama and Hillary Clinton may be colluding to undermine the Trump administration.
Mark Levin took the speculation one step further, earlier this week, when he flat-out wondered if the Obama administration had been surveilling the Trump campaign.

The question is: Was Obama surveilling top Trump campaign officials during the election? … We absolutely know this is true, the FBI did a preliminary criminal investigation based on a potential connection between a server in Trump Tower and a couple of Russian banks. That turned out to be a dry hole, but one of the most outrageous things I’ve ever seen … totally uncovered by the media. Instead of closing the investigation, the Obama administration tried to turn it into a FISA court investigation in June [2016]. Apparently the first application they submitted named Trump … Even the FISA court said no. There wasn’t enough evidence to make out probable cause involving Donald Trump. In the middle of the campaign the administration was actively having Trump investigated.

So did a FISA court grant government officials a warrant to wiretap Trump, as Levin asserts? In a piece published by Heat Street on Nov. 7, 2016, Louise Mensch makes that claim.
Two separate sources with links to the counter-intelligence community have confirmed to Heat Street that the FBI sought, and was granted, a FISA court warrant in October, giving counter-intelligence permission to examine the activities of ‘U.S. persons’ in Donald Trump’s campaign with ties to Russia.
Over at Breitbart, Joel Pollack has an extensive timeline chronicling the ongoing efforts of the Obama and Hillary camps to sabotage Trump, dating back to June of 2016 when the first FISA warrant request was denied.
