The Role of Populism Within Conservatism Under Trump

Over at National Review, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and National Review editor Andrew McCarthy have engaged in a back-and-forth debate over the role of populism within the conservative movement. Sen. Lee believes:

Far from contradictory, conservatism and populism complement each other in ways that can change history — as did the most successful populist in recent decades, Ronald Reagan.
Populism cannot change the fact that government is incapable of solving problems upstream of government — problems of culture and complexity that government amelioration efforts, however well-intentioned, often make worse.

Dan and Amy invited McCarthy to join them to discuss this debate in-depth and to offer his analysis of the developing Trump cabinet.
