Royal Diplomacy Strengthens US-UK Ties Amid Tensions

In a timely discussion with hosts Jeanne Ives and Jim Iuorio, national security expert Eliot Wilson analyzed King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit to Washington for America’s 250th anniversary.

Wilson highlighted the monarchy’s unique role in diplomacy—offering continuity and breathing room beyond partisan politics. The visit aims to repair recent strains in the UK-US “special relationship,” rooted in shared history, intelligence cooperation, and values.

Wilson noted both nations benefit despite short-term frictions over NATO burden-sharing and the Iran strikes. On Iran, Wilson views the regime as a serious long-term threat due to nuclear ambitions and regional aggression, criticizing the UK’s initial reluctance to support U.S. actions as overly cautious.

He also discussed domestic challenges for PM Keir Starmer, including party pressures and public focus on cost-of-living issues over foreign policy. Wilson remains optimistic: the alliance has weathered worse and will endure. The royal visit provided a welcome moment of unity.
