Christian Maxwell Aims to Challenge the Democratic Stronghold in Illinois’ 1st Congressional District

Republican candidate Christian Maxwell joined Chicago’s Morning Answer to discuss her campaign to unseat Congressman Jonathan Jackson, outlining a message centered on safety, accountability, and breaking the political status quo in Illinois’ 1st Congressional District.

Maxwell, a University of Illinois at Chicago graduate, mother of four, and entrepreneur, said her motivation to run comes from seeing communities across the district “hurting in so many areas” due to neglect and ineffective leadership. “There’s a lack of creativity and energy in how our leaders address crime and taxation,” she said. “People deserve a representative who actually looks for solutions instead of excuses.”

Running as a Republican in a district long dominated by Democrats, Maxwell acknowledged the uphill battle but believes many voters—especially younger Black homeowners and parents—are ready for change. “The machine that’s kept people in office here is old and dormant,” she said. “People are starting to realize they haven’t gotten results.”

The wife of a police officer, Maxwell criticized Chicago’s leadership on public safety and immigration policy, arguing that the city’s “sanctuary” stance has put residents at risk. “Sending in the National Guard shouldn’t have to happen,” she said. “It’s the result of extreme neglect and refusal to cooperate with federal law enforcement.”

Maxwell also argued that Black voters have been “manipulated into protecting marginalized groups at the expense of their own communities,” urging them to rethink traditional political loyalties. “We’ve been taught to defend everyone else, but our neighborhoods are still suffering,” she said. “It’s time for policies that protect working families, not political interests.”

On her campaign trail, Maxwell said she’s met voters frustrated by what she calls the “elitist complacency” of entrenched politicians. “When people hear I’m running against Jonathan Jackson, they start signing my petition before I finish my sentence,” she said with a laugh. “That tells me people are hungry for someone who actually shows up.”

Maxwell’s campaign website, ChristianMaxwellForCongress.com, outlines her platform on public safety, economic opportunity, and education reform. She says her message is simple: “It’s time to turn the page. Illinois deserves leaders who work for the people, not for the party.”
